On Monday, the week’s first race for Radcliffe AC was run by the club’s very enthusiastic Juniors. 14 headed for the Tor Mile in Helmshore, where despite the challenging scramble, one fall and one lost shoe, all crossed the finish line with big smiles. The Tor Mile was first held in 1911 and is one of the oldest fell races in the country. Speedy Indie was the first back in 13:38, followed by Rowan (13:53), Lola (14:18), Grace (15:15), Sophie (16:06), William (16:26), George (16:38), Byron (16:39), Luke (16:43), Eliza (17:04), Benjamin (17:42), Aoife (18:36), Poppy (19:16) and Alexandra (23:50).
Also completing this Ramsbottom Running Club event in the Senior Race (an official distance of 1.2, with 551ft of climb and a choice of varying ways down) were Ian Swan (16:30) Chris Mihalyi (16:38), Lucie Tighe (1st WSEN) (19:16), Mark Taylor (19:26), Emma Horner (19:49), Junior Oliver (21:30), Katherine Swithenbank (23:28), John Szubert (23:45), Lisa Antrobus (24:24), Niamh Warr(24:43), Laura Aiken (24:51), Peter Warr (26:03), Louise Shield (27:03), Sharon Bowden (28:16) and Ella Henry (30:06).
On Wednesday, Khama Banda competed in the Fastest in the City. 40 male and 40 female racers took part in this 5K around Salford Quays, Media City with Khama finishing in an impressive time of 17:55.
Lou Shield and Laura Aiken also took on Eddie’s Revenge, deciding that one fell race in a week just wasn’t enough. Crossing the finish line together in their usual infectious good spirits in 49:42, Laura was the first in her age category (FV35).
On Thursday, Stephen Crowe took on the Media City 5k, finishing in 29:05.
Saturday saw Kath Biddle enter the Endure 24 in Bramham Park, a trail ultra where participants were challenged to run as many 8k laps in a 24-hour period as possible. Kath knocked out an immense 81 miles, with a total running time of 22:48:43.
Meanwhile, over in Loweswater in the Lakes, Ian Swan also faced a gruelling challenge, the Buttermere Horsehoe Fell Race, a 23 mile route with an eye-watering 10,700 feet of ascent.Despite especially difficult conditions due to the constant rain, Ian conquered this race in a time of 08:01:35.
