Wednesday saw 23 Radcliffe Athletics Club members lace up their trail shoes for the fourth fixture in the Central Lancashire Grand Prix, the Coronation Trail Race in Rivington. This 6-mile out and back near the River Yarrow featured not only steep climbs and amazing views but also several unruly cows.
Christopher Mihalyi was the first RAC member to tackle this challenging route in a cracking time of 43:59, followed by Ian Swan (45:27), Mark Garner (47:34), Alex Field (47:41), Michael Kontowtt (47:43), Donna Cartwright (48:02), Mark Taylor (48:32), Paul Stevens (52:10), Kath Biddle (53:48), Amanda Callan (53:59), Dominic Parry (55:21), Ethan Malone (55:27), Lucie Tighe (56:35), Steve Hamer (58:40), Alison Howarth (1:01:01), David Schofield (1:05:11), Louise Shield (1:05:08), Karen Wells ( 1:07:00), David Bartlett (1:09:33), Helen Kay (1:10:05), Tracy Wroe (1:17:38), Sara Parry (1:22:19) and Andy Wheeler (1:26:08).
For something a little different, David Schofield and Mark Williams teamed up to take on the Ian Hesketh Memorial Duathlon on Saturday, also held in Rivington.
This event is run annually in memory of Ian Hesketh who tragically died at 27 in 2005, held by the club he had been a member of since the age of 8, the Horwich RMI Harriers.
The ‘RAC Silver Foxes’ were the first relay team to finish the event. Mark Williams ran the two mostly off-road 5k tracks and paths in 22:46 and 24:14, whilst David Schofield completed the 22k cycle section in 50:28, for a total time of 1:37:28.
On Sunday, Kath Biddle ran the Buxton Half Marathon, a scenic and challenging road race through the Peak District countryside. Kath completed the course, known for its hilly nature, including climbs of Axe Edge and Chrome Hill, in a time of 2:04:27.
