Athletes bloom at Stockport Daffodil race

29 January 2024 (by D.Cartwright)

Spring came early for Radcliffe Athletic Club members who were out in force at the Stockport Daffodil 10k.

There was a sea of yellow and black vests at Sunday’s race which was the first in the club’s 2024 road and trail championship.

On traffic-free roads, Mark Taylor led home the Radcliffe contingent in 43:19, followed by Andrew O’Donnell (44:05), Simon Foulkes (44:41) and Mark Garner (45:17).

Mia Derbyshire was the club’s first female finisher in 48:33 and also running were Chemane Golding (52:27), Charlotte Holden (56:05), Brennan Tighe (57:47), Lucie Tighe (57:51 pb), Elaine Bailey (59:12), Peter Warr (59:27), Lucy Tetler (1:01:24) Stephen Crowe (1:02:29), Emma Wolstencroft (1:03:25), Helen Kay (1:06:17), Bev Quinton (1:20:50) and Sara Parry (1:20:51).

Five Radcliffe members pushed themselves when they took part in The Hebden on Saturday, the popular event organised by the Long Distance Walkers Association.

Billed as a challenge rather than a race, participants have the option of running or walking either a 15-mile or a 22-mile route on the hills and trails around Hebden Bridge.

Ian Swan completed the 22-mile course, which started in Mytholmroyd and had 4,080ft of climbing, in a fantastic four hours and 27 minutes despite having a problem with his foot. Kath Davies and Karen Doherty also completed the 22-mile route in six hours and 24 minutes.

Donna Cartwright flew round the tough terrain of 15-mile route in three hours and seven minutes while Tracy Wroe completed an impressive ten miles before being forced to pull out due to back pain.

Katherine Biddle was also out on the trails completing the Tissington Trail Half Marathon, along the site of a former railway line from Ashbourne to Buxton in Derbyshire, in 2:10:49.

Ken Smith completed his third different Australian parkrun in as many weeks, finishing first VM65 at Maryland Peninsula in Perth in 25:27. He has now completed more different parkruns ‘down under’ than he has in the UK!

Closer to home, there was a large RAC contingent at the Heaton Park parkrun.

Rob Shiels ran 21:28 followed by Dominic Parry (23:54), junior Robbie Parkinson (24:10), Ethan Malone (25:07), Alison Howarth (27:07), Sheila McNulty (first VW75 33:20), junior Skyler Parry (39:17), and Sara Parry (39:19 pb).

Results from other parkruns: Bolton – Mark Williams (24:17) and Chemane Golding (62:11 volunteering with the 5k Your Way initiative for people affected by cancer); Burnley – Mark Garner (22:46); Clarence – Helen Kay (35:25); Ormskirk – Bev Quinton (38:50); Peel – Mike Kontowtt (21:30) and Elaine Bailey (first VW65 29:32); Southport – Kath Biddle (26:24); Woodbank – Benjamin Tighe (first JM10 37:56) and Brennan Tighe (37:57); Worden – Stephen Crowe (32:04).
