The Wilf Richards Cross Country Relays

Yet another sunny day greeted 22 Radcliffe AC runners to the Wilf Richards relays at
 Heaton Park, with teams of either 4 men or 3 women running the same distance and course.
Leg 1 was led by Simon Bruton for the senior men, Neil Kirby and Mick Howard (his first race
 after surgery on his legs) the first and second male vets teams and Alan Sumner providing
 the 4th male team. Donna Allen Cartwright led the female seniors with Gerry Dewhurst leading
 the female vet’s team.

Leg 2. Danny Appleby ran for the senior men finishing 3 seconds faster than Simon, his 
teammate. Ady Harris was out next for the first vet’s team and ran one of the fastest legs
 of the day in the vets. John Young was the second vets team runner and put in a good run.
 Mark Cartwright was the second runner for the 4th men’s team and despite being unable to run
 because of injury for most of the season, put in a sterling effort. The second runners off
 for the women were Anna Lupton and Paula Abernethy, Paula running only her second race 
for the club.

Leg 3. David Bartlett was away for the senior men a much improved David of late - keep 
it up David. Tony Davies the next runner for the first vets team and still running strong.
 Derek Dewhurst ran for the second vets and ran well. Vince Ashton was the 3rd runner for
 the 4th men’s team and put in another steady run, he really enjoys cross country, strange man.
 In the last leg for the women Sarah Massey was the anchor for the first women’s team bringing
 them home in 3rd place overall, but yet again there wasn’t a prize for the placed women teams,
 the organiser (or should I say miser) only awarding first place to the women. Kath Davies 
was next for the women’s vets team finishing in 14th overall and 5th vets team. 
Well done girls maybe you will get a trophy next season!

Leg 4.Robin Shiels, another new member, raced for only the second time and brought the senior
 men home in a very credible 20th place -well done Rob. Garry Wilson, who is part way through
 his training for the London marathon, was the anchor for the first vets team and brought them
 in a very well earned 19th overall and 2nd vets team just beating the senior men. Brian Booth
 carrying an injury, ran the last leg for the second vet’s team who finished in 34th overall
 and 6th vets team - Brian showing true team spirit. I ran the last leg for the 4th men’s
 team, being supported by wife Denise who managed to get out for the first time in five weeks.
 This brought us home in 37th place. (Out of how many, Jim? – Webmaster’s wife!)
 To say that Radcliffe AC are a small club we had the second highest number of teams on the
 day with nearly a third of the club running. If anyone is thinking of joining a running club
 we are known as the friendly club and it is true, and we are not bad runners either!
 Yet again thanks to everyone for turning out and thanks to Terry and Jim for their 
encouragement throughout the season. Hope you all turn out next season.
