RADCLIFFE AC members were rewarded for their efforts during the season when the club held its annual presentation. President Terry Nortley and chairman Mark Emmett handed out individual trophies at Radcliffe Cricket Club before announcing the special prizes for the year. Yasmin Parapia picked up two trophies, the Nellie Halstead Cup, named after a former local Olympian and the VLA Events award for the most completed league races during the year. George Critchley also took two prizes, the VLA Events award and the most improved male runner of the season prize. Vet 60 Eileen Royle was most improved woman. The Norman Schofield Trophy for the V45 road champion went to Tony Holt and the overall cross country champions were named as Donna Cartwright and vet-50 Adrian Harris, who both had outstanding seasons. The President's Shield, for work within the club, went to the new treasurer Iain Harris and the Terry Nortley Trophy was presented to Anna Lupton for "putting the club on the map" as the president said, with her many wins throughout the year. It had been a tiring but rewarding day for Lupton, who had driven to Birmingham to take part in the Inter Counties Cross Country Championships where she represented Greater Manchester. She came a creditable 62nd out of hundreds of competitors. After the presentation members enjoyed a buffet and disco. Author - Sheila McNulty

Presentation night 2008

Annual General Meeting Friday 15th January 2010
RADCLIFFE AC's founder member Tom West may be retiring as club chairman after 25 years but he is not looking for a quiet life. He plans to fire up his running career again at the age of 70!
His official retirement came at the annual general meeting when he was stunned as 50 people attended a surprise presentation to him and his wife Joan. The couple received gifts including a glass engraved plaque and a VIP day out at Manchester City, Tom's favourite football club.
He started Radcliffe AC, along four friends, including retiring treasurer David Jackson, in 1984. There had been a Radcliffe Harriers in the town but no club for many years. They called a public meeting to see what the response would be and when they held the first official club night 300 people turned up!
A committee was formed and the club began meeting at Cam's Lane School until 1996 when it moved to its present home at Coney Green Sports Centre.
After being involved in football for many years Tom's own running career started in the 1980s. He has run 18 marathons, competed in Australia, Spain, Malta and France and won age categories and achievement awards, competing on the road, cross country and fells, despite having to deal with a heart condition for many years.
Now he wants to compete on the toughest of these, the fells. He will be 70 next month and plans to train hard this year and next season take on the other 70 year olds in the English fell championships.
At the meeting he was made vice-president and handed over the chairman's job to clubmate Mark Emmett. He said: "Radcliffe has always been a small friendly club but we have had many successes. I have always had a strong team around me and I could not have done it all without Joan's help. But handing over all that work has now inspired me to start a new running era!" Author - Sheila McNulty
Good luck Tom - Vince

When a sign is just not right!

Holiday snaps of signs that just do not look right.
The one below was taken in Poland and I bet they thought the name of the shop sounded good.
Can you imagine them opening in Britain?
