May 10 Round Up

A quick round up of May 2010

30/05/2010:
RADCLIFFE AC had a great turnout for the Smithills Serpent 5 Mile Trail Race on Sunday with 11 runners taking party and two women vets coming first in their age category. Eileen Royle, who has had a superb season stacking up the category awards, took the first vet 60 place with a time of 46mins 27secs followed by Sheila Jones in 50.17, the first vet 55. Leading the Radcliffe runners home in a field of 87 was Rob Shiels in a fine time of 36. 33. Next was Tony Holt (V45) in 37. 50: Steve Hamer (V50) in 38. 56: Vince Ashton 41. 45: Mark Murphy, close on his heels in 41. 55: George Critchley (V50) ran 42. 40: Yasmin Parapia 42. 52: Kath Davies was third vet 45 in 44. 33 and Denise Kay (V40) clocked 51. 17. Vince Ashton did a creditable time considering he had taken part in the Ian Hesketh Memorial Duathlon at Rivington in pouring rain the day before. The event involved a 5k run, a 22k bike ride and another 5k run. Ashton, along with Neil Kirby did the event solo, while Rachael Ellison and John Kirham competed as a relay team, with Ellison running and Kirham on the bike. After a good run Kirby, on his first solo event, was leading among club members, with Ashton slightly ahead of the relay team. But Kirkham put in an extra effort on the bike I think hehad a rocket up his jumper! - Vince and the final result was Kirby 17th with the relay team 35th and Ashton 46th. And pleased with his run Mark Emmett competed in race two of four in the Chorley 5K park series. Uunfortunately the fast boys were out so he was fifth vet-50. It was a hot night and he was only nine seconds slower than last month's race time in 22.39.

Lupton, selected for Greater Manchester, was eighth woman home in sweltering conditions in Saturday's tough nine mile Lletty Fell Race in LLangynhafal, Denbighshire. Taking in 2,900 feet of climbing 56 women competed and along with two other Greater Manchester runners Lupton secured second team place and her medal.
The event was part of the McCain UK Mountain Challenge and its four races incorporate the European and World Trial Races at Keswick in the Lake District and LLanberis, Wales in June and August. Lupton is planning to run both. She has already been selected to run for her country in the World Long Distance Mountain Race in Colorado in August after she recently won the 24-mile Three Peaks Fell Race for the second year running. Her boyfriend John Brown, who runs for Salford Harriers, was part of the Greater Manchester men's team which also won a silver medal for second team place.
In the Windermere Marathon there was success for Radcliffe when Adrian Harris was ninth overall out of a field of more than 1,000. He was also the first vet 55. On an undulating course with two hills, one at 22 miles, Harris stormed home in a great time of 2hrs 59mins 38 secs. Gary Wilson was only three minutes off his best marathon time when he recorded 3. 16. 47 in the same event and was 34th overall and seventh vet 45. The two Radcliffe runners have been training together and their hard work certainly paid off.

02/05/10: On Sunday 2 May Kevin McGilvray completed his second marathon in 7 days when he undertook the gruelling Neolithic Marathon which runs from Avebury stone circle in Wiltshire to Stonehenge following the Sarsen trail. The ancient route crosses Salisbury Plain and includes over 3200feet of climb was run in pouring rain and strong winds. Kevin completed the run in 4 hours 42 mins dispite aggrevating an old medial collateral ligament injury at 21mile mark. Kevin completed the first of the two marathons when he ran in the London Marathon finishing in 3 hrs 44mins. Kevin raised over £1500 for 'Williams Fund'' a charity who supports specialist research into childrens luekemia. On both runs Kevin was supported by Ann-Marie who was also hoping to compete both marathons but who unfortunately sustained a knee injury in the final weeks of training. Many thanks to those who sponsored me for the two marathons.
