18/07/2010:
RADCLIFFE AC's Anna Lupton has been reaching for the sky and won herself a world title! Lupton was part of a British relay team in the Italian Alps who took on one of the most gruelling events in the calendar of skyrunning , running at altitude. The women's team of three, the Salomon Trail Team, was competing in the robie SkyRaid Race along the 84km of the Sentiero delle Orobie, a route which normally takes a trekker several days to complete. It incorporated the first ever SkyRaid World Championships and involved a marathon of 42km, another 30km race and a 12km event, which included scrambling and climbing. Lupton ran the marathon and the team finished all three events in just over 10 hours taking the world title. Globetrotting Lupton planned to set off earlier this week in her camper van for two weeks training in the Swiss Alps before returning home to take part in the trials in Llanberis, Wales, for the Second World Mountain Championships in Kamnik, Slovenia in September. The day after the trials she will be off to Colorado where she has been selected to run for England in the World Long Distance Mountain Race, the Pikes Peak Race, later next month.
Two Radcliffe members competed in the local Waugh's Well Fell Race, battling against bad conditions to cover its 4miles and 1,000 feet of climbing. Mark Cartwright ran a fine 43m 25secs with Kevin McGilvray clocking 46m 9secs. And at weekend Cartwright tok on the Coniston Country Fair Fell Race, a straight up and down six miles with 2,400 feet of climbing He battled rain and mist to clock 103m 2 secs. Radcliffe A.C. held their inaugural 3 Day challenge over the 8th, 9th & 10th July. Race 1, was the well established Bull Hill fell race from Hawkshaw near Bury. A record turnout of 152 runners competed on a dry humid night around the fells. The race was won by Darren Kay, Pudsey & Bramley A.C in a record time of 35.49, the 1st lady was Debbie Campbell, Skelmersdale Boundary Harriers in a time of 46.14. The 1st home in the 3 day series was Rob Jackson (Horwich RMI) in a time of 39.58 he was closely followed by Paul Dalton (East Cheshire Harriers) and Danny Brocklehurst (Trafford AC) . 1st lady in the series was Ginny Willey (Middleton Harriers) followed by Lauren Marsden (Swinton R.C.).
RESULTS for the Bull Hill Fell Race (8/7/10)
Day 2 saw the brand new Summer Cross country take place from Giant Seat Campsite, where the runners had to race 4 laps around the hilly wooded terrain of the camp. Danny Brocklehurst ran in 1st closely followed by Rob Jackson and Paul Dalton, 34.32 , 34.46 and 34,55 respectively. 1st lady was Ginny Willey who was clear of her nearest competitor Lauren Marsden. Danny Brocklehurst having fallen twice on the final lap was now only seconds behind the leader Rob Jackson and seconds ahead of Paul Dalton.
RESULTS for the Giants Seat Cross Country (9/7/10)
Day 3 saw the weary 33 competitors endure a fast 5 mile race along the Outwood trail, paths of Ringley and the canals of Radcliffe coming to a finish on Radcliffe A.C’s “Nellie Halstead” track on Cams Lane. Race leader Rob Jackson was optimistic of adding the title to his recent success in the Rochdale 3 day event as Danny Brocklehurst was competing with an injured ankle from his falls the previous evening. Dannny took the initiative and set off at a fast pace, he was overhauled by Rob who finished in a credible time of 30.14 and was followed by Paul Dalton in 30.26. Danny finished 4th on the day in 30.50. The strong consistent running of Jackson meant he was the winner of the series, 2nd was Paul Dalton and 3rd was Danny Brocklehurst. In the ladies race Ginny Willey retained her position as series leader coming in 2nd lady on the day. 2nd lady for the series was Lauren Marsden followed in 3rd place by Maggie McClelland. Ginny’s consistently strong running over the 3 days was the key to her success.

Radcliffe A.C. Chairman Mark Emmett said “ This was a great start to a new event for the club, the support of club members was superb and made the event the success it was, kind sponsorship by Polyflor, Radcliffe Building Supplies and VLA Events enabled all competitors to receive a unique “T” shirt in addition to the race prizes.”

05/07/2010:
TEN Radcliffe AC runners joined 102 competitiors in the Eddie's Revenge fell race at Oldham. Living up to its name the short tough event was on a sweltering night, covering just under four miles and climbing 1,060 feet. Kevin McGilvray led the Radcliffe runners home in 35m 06secs with Donna Cartwright and husband Mark running the same time of 35m 14 secs, Donna returning after injury. Steve Hamer was next in, clocking 35m 29secs: George Critchley ran 35m 55secs: Anne Marie Rampley 37m 03secs: Yasmin Parapia 37m 47secs: Mark Murphy 38m 08secs: Mark Emmett 38m 17secs and Eileen Royle 42m 53secs, missing out on the vet 60 prize by 18 seconds. The event was part of the Run The Moors series organised by five local clubs including Radcliffe. For chairman Emmett the race was almost his undoing. Two nights later he was running the last of four events in the Sweatshop Chorley Park Series, in which he was battling for the first place among the 50 year olds. He had been winning by two races to one only to be narrowly beaten by his rival, giving them two wins each. But Emmett came out tops on time differential, 20 seconds up over the four races. And Emmett was racing again at weekend when he took second place in the Northern Vets 5k from the Mason's Arms in Sion Street, Radcliffe in 20min 53ecs. Critchley was second in 22mins 05secs and Parapia was first woman in 22min 25secs. In the 10k race from the same venue Royle was the first woman in 50m 01sec. The event raised £190 for St Ann's Hospice. Anna Lupton showed her form again by taking fourth place out of 99 women in an English Fell Championship event, the Sedbergh 3 Peaks, in the Lake District. The race covered just over four miles with 1,663 feet of climbing, and was one of a series of races in the championships during the season. Also on the fells Mark Cartwright took on a beast of a race at Skiddaw in the Lakes on Sunday, covering nine miles and 2,700 feet of climbing. Mark battled against wind and rain to clock 1hr 24min. 28/06/2010:
RADCLIFFE AC's chairman Mark Emmett has been proving that competition can be stiff at any age. Emmett has been battling it out with a rival to be the top vet 50 in the popular 18th running of the Sweatshop Park Series. It involves four races in Astley Park, Chorley on a 5k multi-terrain course and after the third Emmett is leading by two races to one in his age group. But it was a close run thing after he and his rival from Blackburn Road Runners had been in joint first after two events. In the third race in humid conditions Emmett ran 22m 28sec, two seconds faster than the previous race, and fought all the way with no more than ten seconds between him and his rival throughout. He was overtaken on the second lap but managed to pass the Blackburn runner on the downhill section and stayed ahead to the finish, where he was met by Joan cheering him on and Vince doing the race results. The final race in the series, organised by Chorley AC, is this Friday. And three Radcliffe members took training to a serious level when they walked and jogged the Yorkshire Three Peaks, Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough at weekend. Eileen Royle, Kath Davies and Alan Sumner joined members of Edgeworth Runners to complete the 24miles and 5,000 feet of climbing in 8hr 40m. Author - Sheila McNulty

20/06/2010:
RADCLIFFE AC members have been busy on the road and fells and also in the tough Prestwich Challenge. Denise Kay and Rita Kavanagh both joined other runners in the challenge which kicked off the Prestwich Festival week. It was a muddy time for the women taking on the 8-mile obstacle course, with a few knocks and bruises but they agreed they will both be back for more next year! On the fells Mark Cartwright (V40) ran the popular Holcombe Two Towers covering the four miles and 1,300 feet of climbing in a creditable 43. 29. Mark is really packing in the races and is also cycling to help his fitness, having organised regular Tuesday night bike runs for several club members. George Critchley (V50) also ran at Holcombe clocking 51. 30. In the Horwich Jubilee five mile at Rivington Mark Murphy ran 40. 15 and in the Dunham Massey Park 5k at Altrincham John Kirkham (V60) clocked 22. 28.

13/06/2010:
FIVE Radcliffe AC runners proved their fitness and determination when they completed three tough races in three days. They took on the annual Rochdale Three Day Event at weekend, including the gruelling six-mile Norden Road Race on Friday night, the Norden Valley six-mile multi-terrain event on Saturday and the six-mile Knowl Hill Fell race on the final day. Steve Hamer vet-50 led Radcliffe's famous five home among those competitors who managed all three event, earning them a special t-shirt. He was 25th overall and fifth in his age group, with Rachael Ellison coming third woman overall, next was club chairman Mark Emmett (V50) doing some fine runs, Yasmin Parapia was sixth woman and the remarkable vet-60 Eileen Royle was the only one to take on the three challenge in her age group. The event is organised by Rochdale Harriers and runners can take on the three races or run them separately and Radcliffe had a good tunrnout for all events with ten in the road race, five in the multi-terrain and then ten again for the fell race. On the multi-terrain day Hamer was 41st overall in 52. 27: Ellison 51st in 55.02: Emmett clocked 56. 46: Parapia 58. 18 and Royle 1. 02. 58. At Knowl Hill it was Mark Cartwright who led home the Radcliffe runners in 57th place, pleased to get under an hour in 58. 38 on a new course with Hamer coming in 77th place in 1.2. 15. Kevin McGilvray (V55) ran 1. 2. 30: Ellison 1.4.54: Mark Murphy 1. 6. 16: Anne Marie Rampley clocked 1. 7. 52: John Young (V60) ran 1. 7. 54: Parapia 1.9.51: Emmett 1. 11 23 and Royle, enjoying a rare run on the fells, 1. 22. 23. It was all good experience for the Radcliffe club which plans its own new three day challenge in July.

11/06/2010:
Well, what a hard race, who put all those hills there? Although billed as 6 Mile, it actually is measured at 6.2 miles (i.e. 10k) on GPS but don't let that fool you. This race is best describes as 'a fell race on the road'.
The start travels uphill for the first 1.5-2 miles but doesn't stop there with undulations galore! Results as shown below. Well done to those who took part in all three days. Looks like Rachael did well overall, beating Mark Emmett with Steve Hamer taking full credit for being top Radcliffe AC runner on the three days of tough competition.

06/06/2010:
RADCLIFFE AC's Sheila McNulty took on a mountain of a challenge on Saturday. Sixty-three-year-old McNulty joined Prestwich runner John Cox and Mick Bull, both from Middleton Harriers, to be the first trio to complete the 48-mile Joss Naylor Challenge, climbing 17,000 feet over 30 summits in the Lake District against the clock. The ultra-distance run was set up in 1990 by fell-running legend Lakeland sheep farmer Joss Naylor. It is a challenge for the over 50s with the time allowance to complete it increasing with age. The trio, all in their sixties, had 18 hours to finish the massive undertaking. With support on the hills and at the two road crossings from runners, friends and family all their training together paid off. The challenge starts in Pooley Bridge and finishes at Joss's home in Nether Wasdale. Now in his seventies, Joss was on the hills at Sty Head to encourage the trio and outside his home to congratulate them at the finish. McNulty is the first Radcliffe club member so take on the challenge. Sunday was a busy day for the club's Cartwright family with Donna and Mark starting it off by taking part in the Rossendale Triathlon at Rawtenstall. Donna's brother Greg (correct) Martin completed the swim, Mark the bike ride and Donna the 5k run. They finished second team out of eight. Then Mark was off to run the Edenfield Fell Race while Donna took daughter nine-year-old Jenna (correct) to run in the Greater Manchester Athletic Championships at the Longford Stadium in Trafford. At Edenfield Mark clocked 62. 32 for the tough 7.5 mile race with Rachael Ellison running 65.25 and Mark Murphy 68. 19. Earlier in the week Cartwright had run the 8-mile Blencathra Fell Race in the Lakes with its 2,700 feet of climbing. On the road Tony Holt and Steve Hamer took part in the Joe Gearling Bury Fun Run with Holt clocking 31.00 and Hamer 33.36. Author - Sheila McNulty
