SARAH OXLEY faced her toughest challenge yet when she ran the Lakeland 50 ultra trail race finishing in 19hrs 03mins 46secs.
Despite cold and wet conditions when she started mid-morning on Saturday and heavy rain at night she was well within the 24 hour limit for the 50 miles on a course which went from the northern end of Ullswater through Kentmere, Ambleside and Langdale areas before finishing in Coniston. With more than 10,000 feet of climbing competitors had to visit six manned checkpoints on the way. She said: It was my toughest and most emotional challenge to date but amazing and exhilarating.”
Donna Cartwright was first woman in the Turnslack Fell Race at Calderbrook, Rochdale on Saturday covering the eight mile course with 2,000 feet of climbing in 1hr 27mins 11secs, her longest race in two years. She was one of 11 taking on the tough race which was part of the Run The Moors Grand Prix which Radcliffe take part in along with several other local clubs. The club is doing well in the series and runners wanted to keep up the challenge with Neal Emmmerson in 15th place overall and first home for Radcliffe in 1hr 19mins 21secs. James Hall was 21st in 1hr 22mins 32secs and Chris Paxton was 34th in 1hr 24mins 49secs. Ian Warrington ran 1hr 33mins 53secs: Katie Percival 1hr 35mins 08secs: Paul Swyers 1hr 35mins 34secs: Mauro Rotondi clocked 1hr 39mins 43secs with Kris Lee close behind in 1hr 39mins 47secs. Chris Fletcher ran 2hrs 11mins 05secs and Wayne Holden 2hrs 25mins.
There was a lot of splashing through bogs when seven took on the midweek Lee Mill Fell Race at Bacup, Rossendale. On the 6.2 mile course with 1,089 feet of climbing Chris Paxton was first home for the club in 20th place out of 60 runners in 1hr 05mins 18secs. Donna Cartwright was running well coming first vet-40 and second woman in 1hr 05mins 59secs. Mauro Rotondi (V45) ran 1hr 09mins 55secs: Katie Percival was sixth woman in 1hr 11mins 17secs: Steve Hamer (V55) ran 1hr 18mins 20secs: Lisa Carter was first vet-45 and10th woman in 1hr 21mins 07secs and Kate Holden (V40) ran 1hr 25mins 19secs.
Karen Doherty (V40) had a personal best time for 5k when she ran the midweek Northern Masters 5000m Track Championships at East Cheshire Harriers clocking 27mins 16secs and Jim Rhodes was the third vet-75 in 37mins 38secs.
Vince Ashton (V45), also running midweek, competed in the tough Millbrook Monster Multi-Terrain10k at Stalybridge Country Park and clocked 1hr 06mins 08secs. On Saturday he did the double running the Lancaster Parkrun in 31mins 04secs and the Lancaster 5k race in 25mins 27secs.
Karen Doherty ran the Humber Bridge Parkrun in 29mins 06secs and at Heaton Park Sheila Jones (V60) clocked 24mins 37secs: Paul Barrington (V40) 25mins 37secs: Susanne Andrew 25mins 49secs and Tammy Oluyori 27mins 54secs. At Bolton Rob Lister (V50) ran 28mins 43secs: Dave Bartlett 29mins 16secs Kath Davies (V50) 30mins and Mark Murphy 32mins 04secs.
