TWO Radcliffe AC runners battled grim weather in the challenging Lakeland 50 with Ian Warrington coming a fine 35th place in 9hrs 33mins.
The popular event in the Lake District is billed as one of the greatest running and walking challenges in Europe and has almost 10,000 feet of climbing on its tough route.
Last Saturday keen ultra runner Sarah Oxley also showed her determination to keep going when she ran 19hrs 22mins well within the 24 hour cut-off time.
Ian, who camped at the event centre, said:”I am happy with that when it was pretty much eight hours of rain and gales.”
The route took competitors from the Northern end of Ullswater within the Dalemain Estate to Kentmere, Ambleside and Langdale amongst other places before a climb and descent to the finish at Coniston.There were six manned checkpoints along the way and a medal at the finish for those who manage to battle their way through the poor conditions.
Dave McGrath had a good week on the hills when he came fourth in the evening Lee Mill Fell Race at Bacup covering 6.6 miles and 1,000 feet of climbing in 51mins 40secs and then ran the Turnslack Fell Race at Littleborough at weekend coming home in eighth place in 1hr 11mins 57secs on a testing course of eight miles and 2,000 feet of climbing. Nick Barnes also ran the Lee Mill event clocking 1hr 12mins 44secs.
Peter Hunter faced the wet to take on the Run Aintree Half Marathon getting 74th place in 1hr 43mins 20secs in what he said were the worst conditions he had run in.
In the recent hotter weather Vince Ashton ran the Lancaster 10k clocking 54mins 39secs and Karen Doherty ran the Wednesday evening Northern Masters 5000m Championships on the track at East Cheshire Harriers coming second vet-45 in 28mins 50secs.
In the popular parkruns Paul Barrington ran his 50th one in Berlin clocking a pb as well in 23mins 07secs. Vince Ashton ran the Ellesmere Port event in 27mins 04secs and Karen Doherty the one at Keswick in 30mins 07secs.
At Bolton Mark Williams clocked 21mins 28secs: Mark Garner 23mins: Dave Rushton 24mins 17secs: Rob Lister 24mins 57secs: Kath Davies 28mins 34secs: Elaine Bailey 30mins and Lucy Tetler 31mins 37secs. And at Heaton Park Nick Barnes clocked 23mins 56secs: Sheila Jones 24mins 21secs: Chris Fletcher 24mins 30secs: Iain Harris 30mins 51secs and Christine Berry 33mins 22secs. Steve Hamer ran Worsley Woods in 22mins 26secs and was first vet-60.
