RADCLIFFE AC’s Neal Emmerson may have faced the hottest ever London Marathon on Sunday but he ran 2hrs 39mins 25secs, a record time for the club since its formation in 1984.

He beat his previous best marathon time by almost two minutes and was 141st out of the thousands taking on one of the biggest distance running events in the world. He said: ” The heat was tough and I had to keep reducing my pace as I was fading after 21 miles and could feel cramp and fatigue. But my legs got me round.”

He was one of three club members running in the scorching weather. Vet-50 Jenny Yates clocked 4hrs 30mins 11secs, despite the effects of a virus she has been suffering on and off over the past month plus the heat. Her problems started around 15k. She said: “I was running for charity and I had my name on my vest. Without the crowd shouting for me I don’t think I would have had the time I ended with or even finished. They were amazing.” Lisa Carter (V45) ran 4hrs 44mins 52secs. She said: “I felt OK but it was tough. I was glad to get under five hours.”

There were fine 6th and 8th places for Radcliffe from 536 runners in the Blackpool Festival 10k on Saturday. But hot conditions affected all five who ran the popular seaside event. Ian Warrington came home 6th in 37mins 57secs despite being sick in the heat. An improving Chris Whittaker took the 8th place in 38mins 27secs: McKenzie Madison ran 48mins 12secs: Peter Warr (V45) 56mins 14secs and Debi Warrington, who struggled with the heat from 6k ,was was happy with her 1hr 03mins 03secs.

On Sunday in Bolton it was a different story on a damp cooler day. Eight club members took part with Mark Williams having a good run coming 15th out of 514 runners and getting a vet-50 trophy and voucher with a time of 41mins 04secs. Mark Garner (V45) was next in for the club clocking 46mins 02secs: Mark Wolfenden (V50) ran 53mins 01sec: Janet Rigby (V50) 54mins 35secs: Leonora Rose (V45) 58mins 22secs and Karen Doherty in her first event as a vet-45, 1hr 05mins 42secs. Christine Berry (V45) clocked 1hr 09mins 57secs, 24 minutes quicker than when she did the event as her first ever race before being persuaded to join Radcliffe AC. Vet-40 Natalie Hitchen clocked 1hr 12mins 34secs.

Vince Ashton (V45) ran the midweek Bob and Hilary Towell Cowm Reservoir 5k at Whitworth, Rochdale, clocking 26mins 26secs.

In the 5k parkruns there was another pb for John Gibbs when he finished 12th in 19mins 11secs at Heaton Park. Nick Barnes ran 23mins 48secs: Peter Hunter 24mins 26secs: Chris Fletcher 26mins 38secs and junior Megan Peterkin had another pb, her third in a row, with 34mins 45secs.

At Bolton Ken Smith (V60) clocked 24mins 05secs: Kath Davies (V55) 28mins 10secs: Wayne Holden 30mins 31secs: and Andy Wheeler (V60) 35mins 39secs.

And at Stretford Parkrun there was a new pb for Mark Garner with 20mins 37secs.

Well done to Lisa who has raised £1,100 to date for The Christie in memory of our former head coach Eileen Royle who died last year.
