  • Tough day in glorious weather at Kentmere.

RADCLIFFE AC’s Neal Emmerson took first place when he ran the challenging Pendle Festival Half Marathon beating his nearest rival by more than five minutes.

On a course with more than 2,000 feet of climbing from Barley on Saturday he clocked 1hr 25mins 33secs, improving by five minutes on last year’s time when he was fourth. Ian Warrington came a fine 9th place in 1hr 35mins 38secs and Ken Smith was second vet-60 and 41st overall and well pleased to get under two hours in 1hr 59mins 13secs. The race was one of five events being run during the weekend festival.

It was a tough double for Ian Warrington when he took on the classic Kentmere Horseshoe Fell race in the Lake District the following day. The 42nd event over 12.3 miles and 3,300 feet of climbing it went from Kentmere Village Hall and in glorious conditions Ian clocked 2hrs 34mins 45secs.The events were part of his training for the 48k Peak Skyline race in the Peak District next month. He was one of four members taking on the challenge and Mauro Rotondi was first home for the club in 2hrs 28mins with Paul Swyers running 2hrs 32mins and Scott Baxter just ahead of Ian. Scott is also doing the Peak Skyline race.

There was a sixth place overall and second vet-35 for Chris Paxton when five members ran the Wellybobs 10k Summer trail race on Sunday at Wellybobs Farm, near Darwen. He clocked 41mins 30secs with Dave Rushton next in for the club with a time of 43mins 48secs putting him 12th out of 136 runners and first vet-50. Wayne Holden ran 1hr 04mins 20secs: Sarah Rushton (V45) 1hr 05mins 24secs and Bev McGrath (V50) 1hr 10mins 44secs.

Sheila Jones was first vet-60 in the Windmill Half Marathon at Lytham St Annes on Sunday clocking 1hr 56mins 32secs. On a course billed as flat and fast round St Annes and Fairhaven Lake Mark Garner ran 1hr 53mins.

Sarah Oxley took part in her first triathlon and was pleased to finish in under two hours in 1hr 56mins 54secs. At the Deva Devis Triathlon at Meadows in Chester, a short distance event for women only, she swam 750m, cycled 25k and ran 5k and her 27mins 12secs was only four seconds outside her best for the 5k distance..

Five joined a record breaking number of 322 runners at the midweek 5.5 mile Royton Trail Race. On an undulating course in and around Tandle Hill Country Park, Middleton, Dave McGrath was first in for Radcliffe in 26th position in 35mins 22secs. Chris Paxton was 41st in 36mins 31secs: Steve Hamer (V55) ran 42mins 23secs, a personal best on the course. McKenzie Madison was not far behind in 42mins 55secs and Lucy Dewhurst clocked 1hr 03mins 33secs.

In the midweek Lancaster 10k Vince Ashton (V45) clocked 51mins 44secs putting him 115th out of 231 runners.

In the recent Northern Masters 5k Championships at Radcliffe Karen Doherty was first vet-40 in 28mins 53secs and Jim Rhodes was second vet-75 in 38mins 39secs.

Parkruns were popular again with Karen Doherty running the Keswick Parkrun in 28mins 37secs and Vince our “tourist” travelling to Croxteth Hall in Liverpool and clocking 26mins 10secs.

At Heaton Park Nick Barnes ran 21mins 55secs: Sheila Jones 23mins 43secs: Tammy Oluyori 27mins 51secs and Iain Harris 29mins 55secs and at Bolton Mark Wolfenden (V50) ran 24mins 16secds and Rob Lister (V50) 32mins.
