RADCLIFFE AC’s Mauro Rotondi won himself a silver medal when he ran a 50 mile ultra marathon.
He was taking part, along with two clubmates, in the L2M, the Liverpool to Manchester Ultra on Saturday, following the Trans Pennine Trail and the River Mersey. He clocked 9hrs 33mins putting him in 68th position and among the silver medalists. The first 50 runners won gold and then the runners finishing from 51st to 100th received silver.
Well pleased with his result he said conditions were perfect, dry and not too warm. Sinead Hayes, who is packing in a few ultras during the season, came home in a time of 10hrs 11mins and Lisa Carter 10hrs 14mins 36secs which put her in 114th position. The women will be running together in May when they take on the tough 37 miler, the Old Counties Tops Fell Race in the Lake District with 10,000 feet of climbing.
There was a record turnout for one of the oldest fell races on Saturday when 17 from the club took part the 3.2 mile Rivington Pike Fell race at Horwich. The event is part of the Run The Moors Grand Prix, in which the club takes part, and also the club championship and there was some keen competition among runners. The men’s team finished in seventh place.
First home was Neal Emmerson who was 39th in 21mins 21secs. Dave McGrath and Chris Paxton recorded the same time of 23mins 29secs in a battle to the line amd Ian Warrington clocked 23mins 46secs. It was a busy week with people running more than one event. Sarah Oxley got herself a personal best when she took part in the Valiants Half Marathon in Preston. On a course billed as pancake flat around the quiet lanes of the Wyre Estuary she clocked 2hrs 07mins 26secs beating her previous best by more than three minutes. Midweek she had run the Curleys 5k Trail race at Horwich with three clubmated clocking 32mins 57secs. Ian Hopkinson came home first for Radcliffe in 28mins 56secs with Mckenzie Madison running 29mins 05secs and Bev McGrath 31mins 55secs.
At weekend Ian Hopkinson ran the Llandudno Easter 5k getting a pb with 26mins 21secs putting him 108th out of 234, despite battling against a strong wind on the front.
In the Salford 10k Nick Barnes was first in for the club running 43mins 55secs. Katie Percival ran 45mins 48secs: Chris Fletcher 46mins 23secs: Sheila Jones was second vet-60 in 48mins 29secs: Katie Holden (V40) clocked 48mins 43secs and Kirsten Cook (V55) 54mins 36secs.
At the Hollingworth Lake 5k there was a well-earned pb for Sarah Rushton with 27mins 58secs. Husband Dave was first in for the club in 20mins 35secs followed closely by Mike Kontowtt in 20mins 55secs. Karen Doherty ran 28mins 25secs; Ian Warrington 30mins 03 and Jim Rhodes was second vet-75 in 37mins 35secs.
In the parkruns it was good to see our coach Eileen Royle back in action at Bolton and members turned out to support her and wish her well. She has been running with Kath Davies and they ran round together in 38mins 18secs.
