RADCLIFFE AC’s George Critchley and wife Carole took on England’s highest trail marathon on Sunday.
The couple finished the Scafell Pike Trail Marathon in the Lake District in 7hrs 47mins on a route which covered 26 miles plus and 6,000 feet of climbing. As well as valley running it included a hard climb up Scafell Pike and a descent down the Corridor Route. George described the marathon as “awsome”. He said: “The climbing I can only describe as extremely technical ups and downs. But it was a fabulous day.” The couple, who have been training in the Lakes for the event, encountered sunshine rain and mist on the marathon.
Tony Holt (V50) competed in the Bala Half Ironman, in Gwynedd, Wales, and was 10th male veteran in a time of 5hrs 29mins. He said it was windy and hilly but a “top event.”
In the Rochdale Harriers’ Rochdale 3 Day Event, which has three tough races in three days, Mauro Rotondi (V40) was the only Radcliffe runner to do all three. In the hilly Norden 6 Mile Road Race he clocked 46mins 20secs and in the Norden Valley 6 Mile muti-terrain race he recorded a time of 56mins 04secs. The third event was a hard fell race, the six mile Knowl Hill Fell Race which includes 1,300 feet of climbing. He clocked 1hr 09mins 20secs and his position over the three days was 41st. He had earlier in the week run the Knowsley Active Challenge 5k in 21mins 29secs.
Runners could enter all three events or just one of the Rochdale races and seven other members from Radcliffe took part in the fell race with Rob Andrew home first in 35th place out of 143 runners in a time of 56mins 24secs. Dave Ward (V40) clocked 57mins 46secs: Mike Cooke (V40) 59mins 45secs: John Andrew (V40) 1hr 00mins 07secs: Paul Swyers (V45) 1hr 02mins 36secs: Sinead Hayes 1hr 18mins 20secs and Susanne Andrew (V40) 1hr 43mins 17secs.
Five members ran the earlier midweek four mile Holcome 2 Towers Fell Race on local moorland with Rob taking a good 36th place out of 87 runners and covering 1,300 feet of climbing in 43mins 51secs. He was followed home by Dave in 44mins 02secs: Paul in 47mins 56secs: Roy Rowlands in 50mins 57secs and Mark Wolfenden (V45) in 53mins 18secs.
