  • Success for the ladies

RADCLIFFE AC’s new junior section had its first outing when they joined the seniors at the Red Rose Cross Country League event at Leigh on Saturday.

Harry Andrew, Fleur Carter, Niamh and Ewan Warr, Adam McWilliams and Jude Hockenhull and Isabelle Hockenhull took part in various age groups. The club are hoping junior numbers will soon increase and the section meets every Tuesday and Thursday evening at Riverside School in Radcliffe between 7 and 8pm..

The women had success with 10 among the runners on a tough muddy course with Donna Cartwright coming 12th out of 95 and second vet-40, Fiona Lynch (V40) coming 20th and Katie Percival 25th. Jenny Yates also ran well, coming home 36th and third vet-50. They took second place among the women vet teams and fifth place among the teams overall, a good start to the season. Christine Berry and Lisa Donnelly were taking part in their first cross country.

Fifteen men took part with Ian Warrington first home for the club on a longer course than the women’s in 55th place out of 170. Chris Paxton was 62nd and Rob Lister (V50) next in. Their team was 11th. Full results can be found here:

Eleven runners took part in the Manchester Half Marathon at Trafford at weekend billed as the “fastest and flattest around” with Ian, first for the club again, doing a fine time of 1hr 27mins 32secs.

Sheila Jones clocked 1hr 51mins 51 secs putting her second vet-60 and Paula Abernethy was third vet-50 when she ran 1hr 41mins 11secs.

Mark Williams (V50) ran 1hr 32mins 38secs: Dave Rushton (V50) ran 1hr 39mins 43secs:Nick Barnes 1hr 46mins 53secs: Michael Gilmore (V40) 1hr 47mins 04secs: Chris Fletcher 1hr 50mins 06secs: Chris Fletcher 1hr 50mins 06secs, a personal best by nine minutes : Kathryn McPrince (V40) 2hrs 21mins 22secs: Bev McGrath (V50) 2hrs 23mins 57secs and Gail Champion (V40) 2hrs 25mins 11secs.

Three raced in a wet Lake District at weekend with two doing the double and running a race each day. Organised from Glenridding Lisa Carter and Mauro Rotondi ran the Helvellyn 15km Trail Race on Saturday and the following day took on the Ullswater 12km race, originally 14km but changed because of strong winds. Mauro ran 1hr 15mins in the Saturday event, which went round the foothills of Helvellyn, and Lisa clocked 1hr 31mins 20secs. The following day Mauro clocked 1hr 09mins and Lisa 1hr 26mins 54secs. Michelle Hincks ran the Ullswater event in a time of 1hr 35mins.

In the Barrow Bridge 5k at Bolton Kate Holden (V40) ran 23mins 29secs: Kirsten Cook (V55) 27mins 10secs and vet-65 Iain Harris 29mins 16secs.

Eileen Sharman took on some deep mud, water and lots of hills in the tough 13 mile Hell Runner at Delamere Forest and the vet-60 was the oldest woman in the event and vet-60 Andy Wheeler ran an event with a difference, the 10k Reaper Obstacle Course near Coventry, wading through mud and water and finishing in around two hours, getting himself an awesome medal and t-shirt.

In the popular parkruns Neal Emmerson was first at Worlsey Woods where he ran 18mins 24secs. At Bolton Dave McGrath ran 21mins 13secs: Paul Swyers 21mins 49secs: Steve Lomax 24mins 34secs: Rob Lister 24mins 47secs and Lucy Dewhurst 57mins 36secs and at Heaton Park Peter Hunter ran 21mins 09secs: Sheila Jones 23mins 44secs: Katie Benson 26mins 49secs and Tammy Oluyori 31mins 41secs.
