DONNA Cartwright showed her form again this weekend when she was second woman and first vet-40 in the Windy Hill Fell Race at Littleborough.
Having a great start to the season she clocked 1hr 20mins 18secs for the nine mile event with 1,280 feet of climbing on the hills surrounding Hollingworth Lake. But it was the horrendous conditions on Saturday that were more challenging than the course with runners facing rain, deep slippy mud, wind and lots of icy patches with slippy rocks at Blackstone Edge. Donna was among those who fell cutting and bruising her legs. She said she saw three injured runners but added that although it was treacherous in places she had enjoyed the event. Her fine run put her 51st out of an overall field of 203.
Two other Radcliffe women also took on the tough conditions with Lisa Carter coming home fourth vet-45 in 1hr 40mins 12secs, a personal best time of two minutes, and Kate Holden taking fourth vet-40 place in 1hr 40mins 41secs. Together the three took first place among the women’s teams.
It was a weekend of success for the club’s women with Jenny Yates taking the prize for first-vet 50 and coming sixth woman when she clocked 1hr 43mins 35secs in the Stockport Trail Half Marathon. In cold conditions with some hail, sleet and snow as well as dry patches the popular flat off-road race started from Marple along the Middlewood Way footpath and then back along the Macclesfield Canal.
Adding more success Karen Doherty got herself a medal as second vet-40 when she took part in the Northern Masters AC Cross Country Championships at Ashton-under-Lyne on Sunday. She took a tumble in mud on a sharp bend but an improving Karen recovered to clock 28mins 39secs on a course around 5k.
Bolton parkrun was cancelled on Saturday because of ice but 571 took on the 5k Heaton Park run with the club’s Chris Whittaker in a fine 10th place in 19mins 07secs.Mauro Rotondi (V45) clocked 21mins 38secs: Nick Barnes 22mins 41secs: Sheila Jones (V60) 25mins 32secs: Sheila McNulty (V70) 30mins 41secs: Lisa Donnelly (V45) 32mins 07secs: Christine Berry (V50) 33mins 15secs: Iain Harris (V65) 33mins 43secs: Jen Entwistle 37mins 53secs: Sarah Oxley (V45) 37mins 53secs: Lucy Dewhurst 38mins 01sec and Peter Hunter 50mins 14secs. Some members used the 5k as part of an extended training run. At the Great Local Run at Burrs Debi Warrington, running with husband Ian, clocked 32mins 05secs and Jen Entwistle, after doing 17 marathon training miles the day before ran 38 minutes!
