RADCLIFFE AC had 254 finishers in their multi-terrain 10k with Tommy Harrison from Bolton United Harriers home first in 35mins 40secs.
In glorious warm weather on Sunday the event took in the roads, trails and canal paths around Ringley and second in after a good lead by Harrison was Tony Cullen (V40) of Bury AC in 38mins 02secs with David Taylor, Wesham Road Runners, not far behind in third position, clocking 38mins 27secs. Vet-50 Rob Jackson of Horwich, who runs all of Radcliffe’s events, was a fine eighth place in 39mins 36secs.
First woman, Maria McMyler of Horwich Harriers, a former member of Radcliffe, clocked 45mins 52secs. Second went to Helen Lawrenson (V45) of Wesham Road Runners clocking 46mins 16secs and third was Natasha Goggin (V40) of Saddleworth Runners in 47mins 57secs.
Lots of local clubs had runners taking part with Ramsbottom, Swinton and Saddleworth among them.
Prizes were presented at Cams Lane Primary School, by Race Director Fiona Lynch and club President Tom West. Fiona had an extra interest in the race, husband Peter (V40) was running and clocked 1hr 2mins 10secs and is now the club’s newest member.
Cash raised after the race, which included a cake stall, reached £213 58p and was donated to the Maritime Volunteer Services. Club member Ian Hopkinson is head of the Port of Manchester Unit of the Services and the Unit not only provided marshals but manned the stretch of the race alongside the canal to ensure the safety of runners..
On the club’s racing scene Sheila Jones on holiday in New York took time out to enter the Central Park 10k organised by New York Road Runners and was second vet-60 on a sunny day clocking 50mins.
Four members ran the Rivington 10 Mile trail Challenge on Sunday a tough hot one with Lee Turner running 1hr 26mins 14secs: John Andrew 1hr 36mins 29secs and wife Susanne and Bev McGrath running together in 2hrs 08mins 32secs.
Four members took to the hills in the Wardle Skyline Fell Race in Littleborough. Covering seven miles with 1,250 feet of climbing Dave Rushton was first home in 1hr 1min 16secs with Mauro Rotondi clocking 1hr 1min 47secs: Paul Swyers 1hr 03mins 10secs and Mark Wolfenden 1hr 15mins 52secs.
In the midweek Curleys 5k Trail Race at Horwich Wayne Holden was 42 second quicker than the week before when he clocked 31mins 41secs. The race was the second in a series of three. Mckenzie Madison ran 35mins 27secs; with Bev McGrath clocking 39mins 20secs, one second ahead of Caroline Taylor Smith.
In the popular parkruns Peter Hunter was 33rd in 20mins 35secs at Heaton Park with Chris Fletcher improving by 28 seconds to clock 22mins 13secs. Nick Barnes wasn’t far behind in 22mins 31secs: Tammy Oluyori ran 28mins 21secs and Sarah Oxley (V40) doing her 50th parkrun ran with her dog and clocked 29mins 11secs. Shaun Boult running with partner Tanya ran 31mins 05secs. At Bolton Paul Barrington (V40) clocked 26mins 02secs and Eileen Sharman (V60) 36mins 40secs. At Lancaster Parkrun Rob Lister running with his dog clocked 27mins 58secs and Vince Ashton (V45) ran 29mins 16secs, having pulled his calf muscle on the last climb.
