RADCLIFFE had a good turnout of 18 runners at the Trotters 5 Mile Trail Race on Sunday despite initial fears the course could be hit by the week’s extreme weather conditions. Neal Emmerson showed his form by taking fourth place out of a field of 325 with a time of 29mins 55secs.
Several other events on road and fell had been cancelled or shortened after treacherous snow and ice during the week but organisers at Sunday’s race, starting from Smithills Coaching House, Bolton, kept runners informed of conditions in the lead up to the event and had done a good job clearing most of the ice on the day and warning of problem areas. Sleet was forecast but the bitter wind throughout the week had subsided. Club members praised the work organisers, Burnden Road Runners, had done in putting the event on.
The race was the second in the Central Lancs Grand Prix which several clubs including Radcliffe take part in during the season. Katie Percival came home sixth woman and 73rd overall in 37mins 09secs and Jenny Yates was third vet-50 in 38mins 37secs. The women’s team was third and the “A” and “B” teams both fourth.
There was a fine 22nd place for Chris Whittaker who clocked 32mins 12secs and some competition between John Gibes running 33mins 33secs, John Wrigley 33mins 40secs and Dave McGrath 33mins 41secs. Mike Kontowtt (V55) ran 34mins 45secs, a course pb: Mark Garner 39mins 43secs: Dave Rushton (V50) 40mins 51secs: Steve Lomax 41mins 19secs: Nick Barnes 41mins 29secs: Amanda Callan 42mins 42secs: new member Helen Sandiford 45mins 34secs: Kirsten Cook (V55) 48mins 21secs and Sarah Rushton (V45) 54mins 31secs. Sharon Peterkin clocked 55mins 17secs and Wayne Holden 56mins 24secs, both walking when they were unsure of the ground underfoot.
It was not only races that were cancelled Saturday’s local Parkruns were hit by the weather including Heaton Park and Bolton. Women from Radcliffe got together in a small group and went on tour to the Woodbank Parkrun at Stockport one of the few taking place. They struggled round a complicated five lap course on grass, but thoroughly enjoyed it despite the bitter cold. Sheila Jones (V60) clocked 29mins 19secs: Jen Entwistle 34mins 45secs: Christine Berry (V50) 40mins 24secs: Sarah Oxley (V45) 42mins 13secs and Lucy Dewhurst 42mins 14secs. Vince Ashton (V45) travelled to Wilmslow and clocked 29mins 25secs.
